My best friend walked into my life when I was in sixth grade. He was a golden retriever who followed my sister home one day, and after a waiting period when no one claimed him,we were allowed to keep him. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? He learned them all including how to be a boy's best friend. (IP) To a little boy with few friends going to a new school, he was the best. He knew when to smile, when to run and retrieve, and when to sit with his nose in my lap comforting me when I was sad. (IW) Patiently, he would wait each day for my bus to return from school so we could play. We would play ball, chase the rabbit, go fetch, chase the squirrels, gaze at the clouds, chase the gophers, and chase whatever moved. He had been abused before we got him. Always afraid of the sight of a gun, he would cower under the bed even when he heard a thunder storm. We went canoeing to our secret lagoon and would sneak up on the ducks to see how close we could get. When I got off the bus one day, ready for a new round of play, he was absent.(IC) Though he always came when I called him, he was truant. What began as concern, turned to dismay when he did not return that evening at suppertime. I began to search around the lake we lived on. I searched the weeds, ditches, groves, and corn fields, nothing. We called, but no answer. I made my parents drive every road in five mile radius, still no best friend. The hardest thing was no closure. We never knew if a coon had gotten him, or he was stolen by an evil person, or whether he just died of old age. I cried for weeks, and I still cry as I write this years later. He really was, and always will be, my best friend.
